Power transformers
Substation-class transformers for transmission and large distribution, specified to the impedance, cooling, tap-changing and monitoring arrangement your network needs, and delivered with factory acceptance testing.
The heart of the substation
Power transformers move energy between transmission and distribution voltages at substations, generating plants and large industrial sites. Each one is effectively engineered to order, so the specification, the factory slot and the logistics matter as much as the price.
GovCrest manages that whole chain: specification review, manufacturer selection, factory acceptance testing, heavy-haul transport and delivery to the pad, with one account manager and one contract from award to energization.
Key features
- Specification review against your one-line and impedance
- On-load and de-energized tap changer options
- ONAN, ONAF and forced-oil cooling classes
- Online monitoring including dissolved gas analysis
- Factory acceptance testing, witnessed on request
- Heavy-haul transport, dress-out and oil fill coordinated
Typical specifications
The ranges we source most often. Other ratings, voltages and configurations are available on request.
| Capacity | Substation class, from several MVA to large transmission units |
|---|---|
| High voltage | Sub-transmission and transmission classes, as specified |
| Cooling | ONAN, ONAF, OFAF and multi-stage ratings |
| Tap changing | On-load tap changer (OLTC) or de-energized tap changer (DETC) |
| Insulating fluid | Mineral oil or natural ester |
| Monitoring | Temperature, dissolved gas, bushing and tap changer monitoring |
| Testing | Routine, design and other tests to IEEE C57.12.90 |
| Delivery | Heavy-haul road or rail, shipped under dry air or nitrogen |
Configured to the job
Every site is different. These are the options we specify most often.
Generator step-up and auxiliary
Units that connect generation to the grid, and auxiliary transformers for plant loads.
Substation and unit substation
Step-down transformers for utility, campus and industrial substations, including integrated unit substations.
Mobile and spare units
Spare and mobile transformers to restore service quickly and cover planned outages.
Monitoring and controls
Online monitoring, control cabinets and SCADA-ready interfaces specified with the unit.
Where they go

Common questions
Straight answers to what engineers and contracting officers ask us first.
- How long do power transformers take to deliver?
- Lead times for large power transformers are long across the industry and vary by manufacturer and rating. We quote with a factory-confirmed slot, and suggest alternative manufacturers or ratings when that shortens the wait.
- What is factory acceptance testing?
- Before shipping, each unit is tested at the factory to confirm ratio, polarity, winding resistance, impedance, losses and dielectric strength, among other tests. You can witness the testing, and the report ships with the unit.
- Do you handle transport and installation support?
- We coordinate heavy-haul transport, delivery to the pad and the manufacturer’s field service for dress-out, oil fill and commissioning checks.
- Can you replace an existing unit to match?
- Send the nameplate, drawings and test history of the unit being replaced and we source a matching or improved design that fits the existing foundation and connections.
